Alltel presents a Black History Month “ Words of Wisdom: Lessons in Courage” Essay Contest

Nine (9) $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to students attending an historically black college or university.

Contest Enrollment period: Jan. 29- Mar. 4, 2007

The essay theme, “ Words of Wisdom: Lessons in Courage” recognizes the 50 th anniversary the famous Little Rock Nine, who personified courage and spirit when Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus had the National Guard block nine black students from entering Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas because he didn't want to integrate Little Rock's schools. U.S. President Eisenhower received news of the incident and sent Federal Troops to protect the nine black students.

Essay winners will be recognized during a luncheon reception in Little Rock, Arkansas, where world-renowned poet and author, Dr. Maya Angelou will personally present the winners their scholarships.

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Effective immediately (beginning Spring 2007), students being considered all scholarships must read all information regarding the application process to enure inclusion in the applicant pool. The application does not guarantee a scholarship award. The committee may seek candidates from the enrollment and request applications. Awards will not exceed the cost of posted fees or books. Additional educational expenses such as off campus housing will require appropriate documentation.

Any student enrolled in an approved COE program, in good standing with a minimum 2.8 GPA, 15 hours minimum, and THEA completion will be considered for the College of Engineering Corporate Scholarships.   ANY STUDENT SELECTED FOR A SCHOLARSHIP WITHIN THE COLLEGE MUST SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING at the time of signing the award letter: (1) Copy of Proof of Citizenship of Country of Residence, (2) Copy of Current Financial Aid Award Letter or Statement from the Financial Aid Office, (3) Proof of Completion of GLACIER if applicable, (4) Copy of Current Fee Receipt, (5) Copies of Current Receipts of Paid Fines, and (6) Copy of Current Complete Transcript. A thank you letter, to the donor(s) must be submitted to the CoE Scholarship Manager prior to the award.

  • International Students being considered for any funds (scholarship, stipend, work study, student hourly, etc.) must complete the Glacier Online forms; submit forms to the Scholarship Office as instructed. Process:
    • Non-Resident Alien Students supply their name (first, middle and last) and current email address to the Scholarship Office
    • The Scholarship Office emails the student GLACIER’s password
    • Student receives notification of the password and login instruction for GLACIER
    • Student enters personal data and answer questions and GLACIER will complete required forms
    • Student submits forms to the Scholarship Office
    • This forms should be updated as required
    • International students will not be processed to receive funds until the GLACIER Process is complete.
    • Entire GLACIER manual may be accessed at www.online.tax.net
  • Scholarships recipients are selected scholarship committees. The CoE corporate scholarship recipients are selected by a committee made-up of representatives of each department unless they are donor selected.

Scholarship Obligations, Conditions, and Cancellations

All scholarship recipients are required to attend at least 2 development seminars prior to awards: Resume preparation and Interviewing Techniques.

Understand all of the conditions of your scholarship.    If a donor or College of Administration feel that the scholarship agreement has been compromised then funds can be withdrawn.   Scholarships are to be used for the purpose of education (tuition, books, fees, housing) and misuse of funds may result in cancellation or revoking the award. Scholarships can be discontinued without notification to the student or the College of Engineering.

Scholarship Awards and Acceptance

The amount varies based on the scholarship contributor.    Some amounts may be less than a hundred dollars and some are in the thousands.   Recipient notifications will be posted within the respective departments and until a notification is received by the student, there is no guarantee of  an award.

Scholarship Acceptances will be signed en masse. The scholarship selection process and acceptance schedule will be posted on the web and in the respective departments begining January 2, 2007. Students will have the option of signing on 2 specific days.

Out of State Fee Waivers

An out-of-state waiver is the reduction of out-of-state fees. The College of Engineering evaluates eligibility based on the amount of the scholarship (must be greater than $1,000 (annually) and whether it was competitive.   The recipient must ultimately work with the scholarship administrators to determine eligibility.
